This book help me learn the bad and the good in bugs. Which ones to crush and which ones help. How to prevent, control, and stop the bad of diseases and insects. This is a great go to book and every gardener should have it. The book has good pictures for an easy identification. The book is really easy to flip though. You can go either by plant to find what attacks it or you can go straight to bugs to see what damage it does. My only complaint is the limitation of bugs it covers. There have been bugs in the garden where I go to look it up in the book and it wasn’t there like the bean leaf beetle, but no doubt either way I would still buy it because of how useful the information is. Hope this helps 🙂

This book is incredibly useful! It starts with a section of cultivation information for a wide variety of edibles, which has been so helpful! In addition to how to grow each plant, there are sections on possible issues, including diseases, pests, and poisons. The book then goes on to provide photos and descriptions of a huge variety of pests, and suggestions on how to deal with them. It ends with photos and descriptions of diseases, and an easy-to-use table to help you locate potential causes for the symptoms your garden is exhibiting. Every time I encounter a pest, a disease, or just a weird thing I’ve never seen before, this is my first, and usually last, stop. I can’t recommend it highly enough!

I bought this book three years ago and reference it all the time. Really, I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for natural solutions to growing better plants or getting rid of pesky insects. If you just want to learn a but more about a certain plant or gardening in general, it’s a great book to look through.

If you are a organic gardener and are not interested in chemicals, this is the book for you. I have not seen any mention of chemicals so far. This book starts off with information about a healthy soil. It talks about composting and cover crops to get healthy soil. From that point, it starts going into details by vegetable, fruit or nut. Once you get to a specific plant, it talks about the culture, problems for that plant, how to solve the problem organically and to avoid the problem in the future.

This book has quite a lot of pictures of pests and diseases. While some pictures are small, a magnifying glass will help since the pictures have a lot of detail Most should be fine without a magnifying glass.

This book has a lot of information in it for a fairly small book. The font used is good enough that I can read it without resorting to using a magnifying glass. If you have vision problems like I do, this should be readable.

This book has helped me figure out problems in my yard and garden several times as well as kept me from squashing helpful insects. The book has lots of images and descriptions of insects and plant problems. Sometimes I just flip through looking at the images until I spot something that looks similar to what I’m seeing on one of my plants. Then I can read to see if the image is even more likely what I’m dealing with. If it is, the book provides suggestions for fixing and preventing future problems. Or if it’s something that’s not a problem, then I know I don’t need to do anything about it. Other times, I look up the type of plant I’m seeing the problem on. There aren’t photos in the section, but since many pests and diseases affect multiple plants, it doesn’t exactly make sense to include images of the same disease or pest over and over again. Besides, if the description under a specific plant sounds like what I’m seeing, I can use the index to look it up and the book usually has a photo of it in either the pests or diseases sections. I am forever grateful to the person who suggested this book.

IMHO the most important gardening issue is protecting friends such as toads, tree frogs, bats, bees, butterflies, garden spiders, and the amazing beneficial earthworms. This book is fairly easy to follow and enjoyable to read. I am making a new raised organic garden which I will share my bounty with all creatures. I’m enjoying this book and find it a pleasure to read and become better educated so I will hopefully not do any harm to the beneficial insects. and hopefully grow the most healthy fruits and vegetables. I enjoy the photography and the style of the author.

It is absolutely packed with useful information. It reminds me of my college days. The book is a little on the academic side. In our nursery we refer to it frequently.
