With the cost of food rising, I will start growing some herbs and vegetables again. I am confident that what I learned from this book will help me establish a small vegetable and herb section in my garden. I will keep referring back to this book as it gives good advice on how to keep the soil healthy and deal with pests without using strong chemicals.

I’m the kind of person that likes to know the process of things and not just follow directions. To me this is how I gain better understanding on how to do something. This beginner book is more than just a 101 instruction booklet. This book it’s more than just a guide that gardening. It explains the process of how nature works and what I mean by that is by choosing for example each plant placement carefully and what plants that go together to have the best results. And how to care for the plants and not just plant them in the exact same spot over an over again. Also gives you complete guidance and how to care for your plants and nourish them. Also on how to care for the soil. It is not just about the best fertilizer. It’s no different from human beings taking care of themselves and eating a variety of different foods to gain certain nutrients. When I read this it made so much sense how it works because plants are also living things. It’s just confirms for me that everything in nature has its purpose. Not only that, the book provides other resources such as studies and books from other authors further explaining certain topics. The amount of research, experience, and effort that went into this book really shows and highly recommend it to anyone first learning and starting a garden of their own. It is very easy to understand too which I really like. I was just so blown away by all the information in it. Just really gave me a jump start on what to do.

If you’re struggling with limited space, poor soil conditions, or past gardening disappointments, this might be the book that sets you on the path of eliminating those frustrations.

The world of companion planting, where plants don’t merely coexist—they thrive together, supporting and protecting one another. The book breaks down this ancient practice, offering recommendations on which vegetables, herbs, fruits, and flowers work best together. There is also a section on beneficial insects and natural pest control to encourage the right wildlife to take up residence in your garden and reduce the need for harmful chemicals.

It’s a gardening mentor in book form and should be on your bookshelf.

I really enjoyed this book! My family and I are just starting to grow things in our vast backyard and are interested in permaculture. I never realized how companion planting figures into this as I’ve always only observed traditional garden configurations. I wish I’d known some of this information last year, but now I have a better sense of how certain crops can protect other crops and how certain pairings maximize yields. The layout of this book is clear, with helpful charts, practical tips, and explanations that are accessible even for those new to gardening. I especially appreciated the focus on organic, sustainable practices and how the book simplifies what could otherwise be an overwhelming topic. Great, easy read for gardening enthusiasts!

As a new gardener, (like, I’ve NEVER successfully grown a garden,) I was glad to find this book. I’ve tried gardening in the past and just got tiny little weak looking plants and whatever did manage to grow was eaten by bugs, I didn’t want to use chemicals to enrich the soil and keep bugs away and this book showed me exactly how to do that! The author explains what plants to pair together to keep away pests, and WHY that works so well. She also shows how to enrich the soil naturally in a way that I could understand. She offers step by step directions that make sense. Annie also had tips to make the most of my garden space, (which is not very much) and included a chart to refer to plant pairings and soil improvements. I loved the explanations, for example, why tomatoes and basil work well together. If you want a thriving chemical free garden that maximizes your space, this book is for you!

Very well written book that provides a lot of useful information for someone who is starting out. I like the style of writing because the author uses language that is relatable and provides examples that makes concepts easy to remember. I am keeping this book on hand as there is so much great information. It’s not a book you read and then you are done. It’s a resource you will want to keep going back to.
